"All Mankind Shall be as Brothers"
- Ludwig Van Beethoven

This concert, originally planned to coincide with the 175th anniversary - to the day - of Beethoven's death with a performance of his Ninth Symphony, we now dedicate to the victims of the September 11th attack.

No work is more characteristic of Beethoven's genius; no work of Western music comes closer to the heart of the human condition, its tragedies as well as its triumphs, than does the Ninth.

The vast canvas of Beethoven's final symphony, with its evocations of an implacable Fate, its unearthly serenity, and its unprecedented vocal celebration of the universal Brotherhood of Man, has become a
cultural touchstone for all of us in times of great upheaval. No other composer and no other work have such power to symbolize our perpetual struggle to be free from the bonds of hatred and oppression.

It is a great privilege for me to lead the Soloists, Chorus, and Orchestra of the New York Grand Opera Company in a performance of Beethoven's incomparable Ninth Symphony at Carnegie Hall on this particular day, and at this particular time. In keeping with the somber yet exalted mood of the occasion, I have also programmed the Coriolan Overture, and the Sanctus from the Missa Solemnis.
